Light It Right: How Good Lighting Can Completely Change Your Space
Consider the Lighting
Today I’m talking about one of my favorite easy upgrades—lighting. It’s truly the unsung hero of home styling.
I got incredibly lucky in this department. My husband Jay is obsessed with lighting—in the best possible way. Every time we moved, before we’d even unpacked a single box, he was already taking down the harsh overhead fixtures and swapping out the switches for dimmers.
He knows what many of us sense instinctively: lighting can completely transform the mood of a room. Think about how off it feels to walk into a restaurant that’s just too bright—suddenly, the atmosphere is gone.
Lighting is one of the most underrated styling tools out there—and also one of the most affordable. You don’t have to spend a fortune to make your space feel warm, welcoming, and polished.
Layer Your Light Sources
The key is layering. Try combining overhead fixtures with table lamps, floor lamps, sconces, and even candles (electric or real). Each one brings a different type of glow and purpose—some are functional, others purely for atmosphere.
If you only do one thing? Jay will tell you to add a dimmer switch. Seriously. That tiny, inexpensive change can instantly soften a space and make it feel like a cozy retreat instead of a waiting room. Don’t underestimate the power of warm, layered light—it’s like giving your home a real-life filter.
And if the idea of installing a dimmer sounds complicated, don’t worry—it’s not! You can buy plug-in dimmers that simply go between your lamp and the outlet, with the dimmer control built right in. That’s it. Instant ambiance, zero wiring required.
Here are a few of our favorites:
Lutron Credenza Plug-In Dimmer — a simple slider that works with most lamps.
Kasa Smart Plug Dimmer — perfect if you like voice or app control.
Target Room Essentials Plug-In Dimmer — an affordable, easy-to-find option for renters.
Rental-Friendly Lighting Fixes
Lighting is one of the easiest (and landlord-approved!) ways to personalize a rental. You might not be able to tear out the flooring or paint the walls, but you can completely shift the mood just by rethinking how your space is lit.
Let’s talk about the elephant—or rather, the “boob light”—in the room. Those basic flush-mount fixtures seem to appear in every rental. If you’re stuck with one, try these quick fixes:
How cute is this boob light cover from Urban Outfitters? There are so many fab choices that will make a such a difference.
Soften it with a lower-wattage or warm-toned LED bulb (2700K–3000K).
Install a dimmer switch if possible—it makes a huge difference.
Add a diffuser shade (you can find inexpensive ones online) to hide the glare.
Or, if your lease allows, swap it out for a plug-and-play pendant fixture that hangs from a ceiling hook and plugs into the wall—no wiring required.
With just a few tweaks, even the dreaded boob light can fade into the background while the rest of your lighting takes center stage.
Affordable Lighting Sources
If you’re ready to play around with lighting, you don’t have to spend a fortune. Some of my favorite sources for stylish, affordable options are easy to find and full of possibilities:
IKEA: Minimal floor lamps and dimmable bulbs at great prices.
Target: Stylish table lamps and sconces that won’t break the bank. I have so many great basics with slightly elevated lines all over my place and most cost around $20.
Amazon: Smart bulbs (like Philips Hue or Kasa) that let you control brightness and color.
Thrift Stores: Vintage lamps are easy to update with a new shade or bulb, just try them out before you buy to make sure the electrical works. Jay will tell you that the electrical is easy to upgrade but that is a bridge too far for this DIY’er.
“Good lighting isn’t just about brightness—it’s about control. If you can adjust it, you can set the mood.”
Quick Lighting Upgrades
And if you’re not in the market for new pieces just yet, a few simple swaps can completely change how your space feels. These quick upgrades are renter-friendly, easy on the budget, and instantly rewarding:
Swap out cool white bulbs for warm white (2700K–3000K) to instantly cozy things up.
Add a plug-in dimmer for lamps if rewiring isn’t an option.
Mix lamp heights—floor + table + wall = layered magic.
Try LED candles in corners or on shelves for a soft evening glow—no fire hazard required.
Final Thought
Take a look around your space tonight. Could a softer bulb, an extra lamp, or a dimmer switch completely change how it feels? Probably. Lighting is one of those small details that can quietly transform your entire home—no renovation (or landlord approval) required.
